A family-owned and operated bakery and bulk food products store keeps the dough rising and, even though the facility is small, it accommodates tour bus stops with advanced notice. They stock a variety of candies and sugar-free treats to round out their offerings. Call ahead to find out when the bread comes from the oven on the day you want to visit.

Mikes Farm

Mikes Farm is open to the general public but its goal is to offer families and groups interested in farm life activities they can enjoy together. These activities include hayrides, Christmas trees, pumpkin picking and a variety of other crop sales. Facilities also accommodate cookouts, birthday parties, and luncheons for groups. Educational school tours can be scheduled in the spring and fall. The visitor operations include a full service bakery, restaurant, farm crop picking and sales, and an animal petting area. Tarkil Branch Farms Homestead Museum

Come touch history at Tarkil Branch Farms Homestead Museum.  The museum features an 1830s dogtrot style house, completely furnished to that period. Nine other vintage farm buildings containing over 850 artifacts from the past and a country store structure (c. 1925) are part of the offerings.  Located on a 375-acre working farm, Tarkil offers visitors a chance to see demonstrations of nineteenth-century farm life, crop production, and food preservation.  abf@intrastar.net.

In The Red Farmstead Cheese

The Bingham familys wall of honor includes show ribbons from their goats, and a dairy license for their herd. The cheese and meat products are sold under the name of In The Red Farmstead Cheese. Most of their cheese products are sold in a feta-style consistency. The cheese products are sold mostly off-site in places like state farmers markets, but also include local outlets such as at the gift shop of the Country Squire Restaurant.  Dairy visits and product sales should be scheduled in advance as the Bingham family does not have established business hours at their farm operation.

FAISON

From the first small patch of strawberries planted in 1964, Cottle Farms of Faison feeds much of eastern North Carolina on a steady diet of plump strawberries and then follows the season supplying the public with a variety of other vegetables. Cottle Farms nursery operations grow 14 million strawberry plants that they utilize in their operation or sell to other strawberry growers. When the berries are ripe, Cottle Farms opens its fields in Faison for school field trips.  On the way to the berry patch they get to view some farm animals and a small herd of bison kept just for the enjoyment of students. www.cottlefarms.com.

The season starts in April with luscious strawberries ripe from the fields, followed by spring cabbages and onions. Next, youll find blueberries and later, sweet watermelons. Later, youll be treated to peanuts and grapes. The season ends with pumpkins and mums in the fall.
