Friday Afternoon: Liberty Hall Restoration | Cowan Museum of History & Science

After you’ve enjoyed your lunch, take a short drive over to Main St. towards Liberty Hall.  You will immediately be transported to the antebellum south upon seeing the beautiful Greek revival plantation home of the Kenan Family.  Stop in the Visitors Center upon your arrival, and then enjoy the tour of the tour of the home that includes many beautiful antiques!

Directly next to Liberty Hall is the Cowan Museum of History & Science.  It’s fascinating to see the collections of artifacts and farming and woodworking tools used back in the 19th century, and what life was like then.   Duplin County today is still very agricultural, it’s great to see the geological specimens and early science specimens that brought us to today.

Friday Afternoon: Westwater Country Ham – in Warsaw

Right along with muscadine wine, hams is right up there as one of Duplin County’s claim to fame.  Three generations and more than forty years of drying and curing hams the old fashioned way has made Westwater Country Ham a local favorite, and widely known all over Eastern North Carolina.

This is a fun place to stop and to appreciate Duplin County’s agricultural heritage.

If you’ve got friends or family that you think might like a ham but weren’t lucky enough to make it with you on your trip to Duplin County, Westwater Country Hams ships via UPS daily.

Friday Dinner: Country Squire Restaurant & Winery – Warsaw

There’s a Scottish saying, “Cead Mile Failte”, which means “A hundred thousand welcomes.  And you will certainly feel the Scottish heritage in Duplin County at the County Squire.  The County Squire has a restaurant as well as winery, and a quaint and charming Inn.  Parts of the building on this formerly busy by way date back to the early 19th century.  They’ve got a great lunch menu.  My favorite is the Korean barbeque beef sandwich paired with a delicious glass of Country Squire’s own the Sweet Scottish Heather Chardonnay.  Be sure to pick up a bottle of wine or two from the gift shop to take home with you or to enjoy in your hotel room
